“…organizations that talk about MANAGING change are getting ready to resist it.

I am tempted to let this just stand alone as a quote…
The factors that wish to control far outweigh those that look to guide (and maybe corral which is a more appropriate controlling function). The list includes: Anyone internal that wants power, Anyone external that wants power, Anyone powerful that wants to keep it and Anyone who feels powerful when they make lists and cross off as they go. Oh, also anyone who stands to make money which is a different kind of power.
The organizations David is referring to (which is most) tend to create change structures that look a whole lot like the current organizational structure. And while I understand the desire to build this capacity internally (control) external influence can help you to see this happening. Good external influence will help you to build capacity and competency to GUIDE change (which should be what you wanted in the first place, control tends to stop change in its tracks).
Can we mix terms and say that maybe planned organic change might make sense?
